3 Steps to Write a Job Search SOS [Video]

SOSgirl.jpg

(Photo via Ban T-Shirts)

One bold anonymous friend of mine (fresh out of college-university) was trying to find a job and decided to send out a handy little SOS to his networks to help in his job search.  I respected him for that and decided that it was a good quick reminder for you job seekers out there to start building those networks before you need it and to get them to help you out as part of your “ninja” arsenal of tools.

First…

Remember to Use Everything including the Chop Sticks

During a “jobs jobs” search you want to make use of every possible tool on your belt.  Leave nothing out of your arsenal or strategy.  You may spend less time on some tools and more on others.

The job search SOS is a pair of chopsticks that you’re using to fight it out in a restaurant.  Imagine that while…

Writing the Arrow Fired Letter

Update your resume, brainstorm, mind map and think up every important thing you want people to know about your situation, you, your accomplishments and your goals.  Write this SOS like you’d write a cover letter and get it edited by a trusted friend several times.  Failing that have the computer read it back to you.

  • Keep it sharp and concise
  • Emphasize your strongest achievements
  • Use bold headings

Here’s an example of one by the anonymous connection of mine:

Good afternoon,

As some of you may be aware, I am a recent graduate of [a Green Business Management program, with a focus on the Green Building Sector]. Buildings play an integral role in creating a sustainable future based on operational efficiencies, conservation and design. I believe that this is a great opportunity (industry) to help reduce our GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions and do it in a cost effective manner.

I am familiar with, and a member of several initiatives and organizations including (LEED, BOMA, TAF, MEER, CaGBC) and actively involved in the [city] Forum for Green Building & Design speakers series. I am also the Green Building Coordinator for a large condominium complex in [city].

I have a Hon. B. Commerce degree with a focused attention in accounting and finance, and currently pursuing LEED AP certification. Utilizing my finance, accounting and sustainability background along with my real world experiences in real estate / property management, and sustainable development, I am looking to build a career within the Green Building industry.

If you or any of your contacts could be of assistance in helping me further develop my career, by creating a mutually beneficial connection I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,

[Anonymous Candidate]

My connection’s SOS was a good start.  There are definitely ways to really make it shine.

Here’s are some of the things you might do to improve this:

Good afternoon,

Hoping you are all doing great!  Let me know what you are all up to! Anyhow, as some of you may know, I am a recent graduate of [a Green Business Management program, with a focus on the Green Building Sector]. Buildings play an integral role in creating a sustainable future based on operational efficiencies, conservation and design. I believe that this is a great opportunity (industry) to help reduce our GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions and do it in a cost effective manner.

Financial Management Experience

I have a Hon. B. Commerce degree with a focused attention in accounting and finance, and currently pursuing LEED AP certification. Using my finance, accounting and sustainability background along with my real world experiences in real estate / property management, and sustainable development, I am looking to build a career within the Green Building industry.

Knowledge of Green Building

I am familiar with, and a member of several initiatives and organizations including (LEED, BOMA, TAF, MEER, CaGBC) and actively involved in the [city] Forum for Green Building & Design speakers series. I am also the Green Building Coordinator for a large condominium complex in [city].

How to Contact Me

If you or any of your contacts could help me out in this search that would be fantastic!  Let me know what I can do to return the favour or help you out now or in the future!  Please have them contact me at xxx.xxx.xxxx or email me at xxxx@xxxxx.xx.

Thank you,

[Anonymous Candidate]

PS.  Please forward this to at least 10 people you think could help!  Thank you!

I moved “Financial Management Experience” to the top position because this is my contact’s strongest area (in this situation anyway).  Other possible changes include…

The sentence:

“Hoping you are all doing great!  Let me know what you are all up to!

Helps to open up the conversation by focusing it on your connections and making less “me” centred.

Adding this sentence:

“Let me know what I can do to return the favour or help you out now or in the future!

Makes sure that you are giving people an incentive to help you out because you’re going to help them out now or later on by returning the favour.  Again it helps to make it less about you again and makes it an “obvious” win-win.  The easier you make it the better.

You’ll also want to add:

“Please have them contact me at xxx.xxx.xxxx or email me at xxxx@xxxxx.xx.

If your SOS is forwarded to someone by email (the original SOS was on LinkedIn) then people will have an immediate bit of contact information to get in touch asap.  If you forget this people might just file it away without touching base and end up forgetting about it (human nature).  The easier the better for potential helpers.

Plus add:

“PS.  Please forward this to at least 10 people you think could help!  Thank you!

You want to have the “call to action” repeated and made really, really clear.  Have your friends send this to people.

Use the above as a template for your own email, blog post or SOS message.

Remember think of this message like a cover letter.

And…

Beat It Gently into People (Like Bread)

Send that SOS to your professional and personal networks on a regular basis because people might have missed it on the fast pace of email or Facebook.  In an ideal world you’d have built the perfect network because you knew exactly what you wanted.  Since the world is far from perfect, use the SOS as your emergency kick start.

You can use LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.  Do some ninja “joint casing” (scouting research) to find out if there are networks you should be a part of that would help you with your job hunt.  In the upcoming job search ebook you’ll find out why LinkedIn should be a network you must have (plus one other…).  For now get an account and start building relationships with ninja-to precision.

Send the SOS out regularly enough without ticking people off.  Once a month is a safe bet.  Once a week is pushing it.  Once a day is likely to get you a lot of disapproving frowns.  (And I know what that can be like, learn from my mistakes.)

Just remember…

A Helpful Catch 22

Let it be said that it’s still a bit of a long shot since your network could have everything under the kitchen sink except the right connections for the job you want.  Always remember to make sure you’re laser sharp with your goals and the company you want to work for (vital, vital, vital).  That way you’re making the right connections (beforehand) and your SOS will be a ninja star that flies true.

If you’re still employed you might want to avoid using this kind of SOS unless you send it to people who are definitely in a different work place.  (You’ve been warned)  If an employer finds out you’re looking for work elsewhere it’s usually reason to fire you.  These days there is news of employers actually working with employees to find other jobs to make up for lost hours so you can avoid worry in those cases (see A New White-Collar Juggle).

In Summary…

So get your network involved, let people know you’re looking and write up a message summarizing the very best you have to offer so people know exactly what to look out for.

Feel free to connect with me personally to share your biggest problems, fears and concerns about job searching and I will work to address them in my upcoming ebook due out in the next few months.  I’m serious.  I want to help you find what you’re looking for.  Use the Contact Us form above!

  • 171+ Job Search Sites to Find Your Career [Video]

Finding the right job site can take a lot of time so to help you kick start one part of your job search I’ve put together over 171 job search or job web sites just in case your Google Search missed something (because Google changes every minute).

Here’s a summary of the listing sections:

    • Job Sites That Cover Everything Down to a “T”

    • Job Sites for College and University Students
    • Job Sites for Environmental, Green or Nonprofit Careers
    • Job Sites for Management, Executive and Other Professionals
    • Job Sites for Diverse, Ethnic or People from Other Cultures or Backgrounds

The job sites in each section are arranged in alphabetical order.

    Lets get started!

Job Sites That Cover Everything Down to a “T”

These are job sites for worldwide, global listings, the United States, Canada and beyond.  This includes the massive global Web sites like Monster.

Adecco – This group claims over 50 years experience and 6000 offices worldwide.

All Job Search – This site pulls information from newspapers and newsgroups.

America’s Job Bank – “…a U.S. Department of Labor-sponsored Web site that offers career resources and workforce information to job seekers, students, businesses, and workforce professionals to foster talent development in a global economy.”

AOL Jobs – offers jobs in partnership with Career Builder.

Apprenticesearch.com - ”The website is designed to help connect apprentices and employers across Ontario and is a free service operated by not-for-profit organizations and community agency partners in Ontario.”

Ask the headhunter – claims to be “The insiders edge on job searching and hiring.”

    Boulder Job Listings

Brain Hunter - Zylog says it’s the ”leading provider of IT and Engineering professional staffing services and solutions in Canada, with global delivery capability.”

Career Exchange – “the foremost independent staffing company in South Florida.”  It lists jobs from all over the world.

Career Jet – “Careerjet’s job search engine network encompasses over 50 countries, featuring separate interfaces that are translated into 20 languages.

Career Overview – aspires to help “career professionals, job seekers and students make better, more informed career choices by providing them with relevant, reliable and up-to-date career and job information.

CareerBuilder – says they are the “global leader” in recruitment using information technology, partners and superior customer service.  They are owned by Gannett Co, Inc., Tribune Company, The McClatchy Company, and Microsoft Corp.

Coolworks South Carolina Jobs – This one lists jobs in categories as diverse as rafting, fishing, river guide jobs, cruise ships and more.

Craigslist – A very popular classified for finding jobs locally.

Dice.com – says it’s the leading site for “technology and engineering professionals” in the United States.

DirectEmployer.com/JobCentral National Labor Exchange – “This megasite was created in combination with a large group of national employers. The DirectEmployer.com job search engine allows you to search by keyword, filter by date (date listing was posted), source (employer or staffing firm), location, and industry

EmploymentGuide.com – This is the job board for a set of 75 weekly employment magazines in the United States.

Flip Dog – This was once a highly recommended site.  Now it’s owned by Monster.

FortBendJobs.com – Mysteriously a very localized job board in the US that came up in my search.

HotJobs – This job site uses Yahoo’s search system and is run by Monster.  It used to be Monster’s competition.

Hound – is a powerful job search engine that pulls jobs from employer web sites and not from job boards.  It claims to be highly effective — if that’s the case it’s a hidden gem for recruiters and job seekers.

Indeed – This one is a search engine for jobs on both company sites and boards.  Guess Hound is just one of many after all.

Job &  Career Tools - More like a premium set of searching tools than a site.

JobBankUSA – This is another large online job site that works primarily for people in the United States.

JobFox.com – This job site sounds like the “eHarmony” of job search.  It sounds more like matchmaking.  Then again, most job sites pretty much do that anyhow.  They say they use a specially patented system called Mutual Suitability System (TM) to pull it off.

Jobing.com – They claim to help you search local jobs, employers and people.  The question is “which local?”

JobOpenings.net – This job site is based out of South Carolina.

Jobs SC WSJ (Wall Street Journal) – Just how many variations of a job search page can Wall Street Journal have?  This is the second and it says it has a “large selection of useful job search articles, job search engine and job tools.”

JobsinPods – Instead of reading through a job board you can listen to podcast readings instead.  You can put these job posts that are read aloud into iTunes (or subscribe to it there).  An interesting take perhaps — reminds me of video resumes.

jobster – A job site that says it offers unlimited job alerts.  In reality many job sites already offer that.

Next are the “jobs jobs” sites for college and university students.

Job Sites for College and University Students

The following job sites are for college or university students looking for their first entry-level job or post-graduates looking to cut their teeth on something real world.  Surprisingly there are few sites (in English anyway) tailored to students or maybe that’s less surprising than I think.

Student jobs are often listed on other job sites under their own student category.

College Recruiter – This is the web’s largest job board for college and university students looking for internships, recent graduates looking for entry-level jobs or other careers.

Monster College – This is Monster.com’s student focused version of their already massive web site.

These positions, offered in a wide range of organizations, will help young Canadians learn the skills required to gain and sustain future employment within the sector. This project is a collaboration between the YMCA and YWCA Canada, with funding provided by the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.”  One of the organizations I’ve worked with, FoodCycles has had a lot of help thanks to this internship program.  It is unknown how long it will last however as of 2010.

Job Sites Are Chopstick Level Weapons

Job boards should be one part of your ninja arsenal for finding a job.  Since they are openly listed they can give you heavy competition.  Some search engine sites actually hunt down company posted jobs though it gives you only a slight edge.

You should spend less time on job sites and more time focusing on the job you really want and going for it — ninja style (read more about that in the upcoming job search ebook in the next few months, sign up for the Priority Notification List on the right hand side —–>).

Your goal is to create a sword that cuts bamboo like it was paper.  Chopsticks are what you use when you have no choice.

Take note that some job sites are part of a large network of similar looking sites that are tailored for jobs in a specific area.  Ninety-nine percent of these sites are English based.

The list is based on research and turned up a lot of missing yet very popular niche job web sites.  A little less than half of the job web sites were started in Canada and many of those job sites also list international jobs.

    In Summary…

There are a lot of job sites out there often saying the same thing about what they do.  There are 15-25 search engines out of the 171 listed that I highly recommend and that’ll be coming out in a future article.  Job sites are chopstick style weapons — you use them in a pinch and you look for sharper and better tools and tactics to survive.
