SLA is creating business planning workshops for people who are new to the art and for college or university students who want to start their own social enterprise business or not for profit. We want to hear your thoughts, comments and suggestions on this 5 minute or less survey.

If you’re a college or university student you can take this survey instead.

The first 10 people who do the survey get 2 free hours of business or project planning assistance by phone, email/online chat or in person (if you’re in Toronto).

That’s a value of $150 just for answering a survey (if your quick on the draw)!

And of course feel free to contact us through email, phone (416.845.0818) or Twitter for quick advice about planning your business, organization or project any time!

  • Canada’s Top 9 Cities for Employment

    alberta_energy_vgov.png

According to MoneySense‘s annual list of Best Places to Live, Calgary, Alberta is considered the best Canadian city for job opportunities based on generous salaries and above-average discretionary income.  With a population of over 1 million and an unemployment rate of 3.5%, it is no wonder that people have fled West to capitalize on income during these times of economic recession and a scarce job market. In fact, Calgary has seen an increase in young professionals living there either to stay or to obtain job experience in their industry and then go back to their home province or country with more employable skills.

Albertan communities make up for 6 of the top 9 Canadian cities to work:

    2.  Brooks, Alberta
    3.  Cold Lake, Alberta
    4.  Grand Prairie, Alberta
    5.  Edmonton, Alberta
    6.  Estevan, Saskatchewan
    7.  Levis, Quebec
    8.  Winnipeg, Manitoba
    9.  Red Deer, Alberta

There is a high demand in Alberta for engineers, registered nurses, and computer analysts in addition to professionals in the skilled trades but the future of green jobs in Alberta is challenging.  The fossil fuel extraction industry, for example, has experienced significant losses since late 2008 due to it being more capital intensive than labour-intensive. It continues to be on a decline and this matches the global trend in employment in the fossil fuel sector which Alberta heavily relies on. The agriculture sector hasn’t been doing too well either largely because of the growing trend toward long distance transportation of food, increasing the cost of local food production. However, if Alberta soon decides to make smart investments, it can become a leader in Canada and indeed a world leader with the resources that they possess. Thousands of green jobs can be created in energy efficiency in the short term, in building transit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and in the renewable energy sector.

Overall, while the winter may be the major push factor for those who despise frigid temperatures for 5 months on end, employment opportunities in the mid-West have sunny outlooks in comparison to Canada’s other provinces.
