Used to use MobileMe for the Web site a really long time ago. Love Apple. Love them a lot.
In fact I totally understand their strategy of making sure they control all the aspects of their operations completely. They screen iTunes or AppStore submissions to make sure they work and play completely within the Apple environment. It makes for stronger branding and a more unified front.
Its one reason why Apple and Windows are so widely recognized with a consistent look and feel while Linux has so many different versions that it’s hard to place it. Don’t get me wrong — I like Linux too however it’s not well integrated with the applications that are currently out there. Flexibility is a must these days.
Lack of Javascript on MobileMe Killed
Unfortunately MobileMe and iWeb are part of that strategy. And unfortunately they had one major point that drove me away.
It was the lack of javascript support.
When you create web pages using iWeb that are hosted on Mobile Me it’s impossible to have javascript. Its just plain unfortunate. You can’t use Google Analytics easily or even my favourite SEO optimized Thesis WordPress theme.
That’s why I switched to hosting with HostGator until the day Mobile Me has caught up with the other web hosting solutions out there.
What MobileMe Does Well
When I was using MobileMe the thing I loved about it was the ability to sync everything to the online cloud and access it on any one of my Mac tools — the iPhone or my Macbook Pro. Hell it even synced my MacJournal entries — that had been a pleasant bonus.
What was really amazing however was the ease of having your email, file storage systems and everything else right in the MobileMe interface without a large amount of setup or learning time.
What Apple usually does well is the ability to have everything Apple sync or play nicely with everything else.
With standard web hosts you literally have to be a web network admin person to setup email to work with your client, deal with domains, etc. Apple nearly gets it right in making it easy enough for anyone to get started straight away (though there were a few hitches with setting up domains when I tried — it wasn’t a complete DIY process).
If MobileMe can address the javascript issue and maybe make domain management easier it would probably lure me back at some point. Lets see shall we?
